I don’t believe I’ve talked much here about my involvement with Girl Power Hour… some of you might have seen me mention it on my blog, Facebook or Twitter, but I thought I’d take a minute to give you a bit of the story…
Girl Power Hour is a monthly networking event for women in Seattle, and I’m a member of the seven-woman team, dubbed “The Power Team,” who plan and market the events. The signature of a Girl Power Hour event is a chic location (swanky bar, restaurant or space), cocktails, small bites, cupcakes and a swag bag with lots of dressed up, powerful and successful women in attendance to meet each other and support a local charity.
Last June after I was laid off from my terrible, no-good job, I knew I wanted to work in social media full time, and noticed that at the time, Girl Power Hour didn’t have someone managing or growing their online presence. And so a star was born.
Joke! Not a star – but Girl Power Hour’s Social Media Director ala Jeanna Barrett.
In the past year and a half, I’ve had the opportunity to work side by side with amazingly driven, talented women – and meet those who empower me to be the woman I hope to be some day. We see all types of women at our events – entrepreneurs, fashionistas, hairstylists, marketing gurus, college students, moms, CEOs, the unemployed – you name it. I cherish each conversation and connection I’ve been able to have with my fellow sex – the fabulous ladiezzz!
This month, Girl Power Hour turned three years old. We’ve come a looong way since the founder, Darnell Sue, launched the idea in 2007. In this past year alone, we’ve grown our online networks (Flickr, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and soon to be location-based services), launched a membership program, job boards, a blog with more than 30 guest female bloggers on every subject from spa hopping to real estate to the best desserts in Seattle, and sold out nearly every one of our events at 200+ women. We’ve been on New Day Northwest, a local television program, and written up in Seattle Metropolitan Magazine and featured in DList Magazine (pg 41!). It’s been a very, very exciting journey that I’m humbled and proud to be a part of.
I can’t wait to see what the next three years brings Girl Power Hour and The Power Team!
(I know we’re starting with expanding down the West Coast, so let me know if you’re interested in being involved!)
